Cordillera will resume the freeze/thaw restrictions that limit trucks to 12,000 pounds per axle, versus the normal highway restriction of 18,000 pounds per axle, sometime between mid-February and mid-March in order to protect the structural integrity of the asphalt. The implementation and duration of these restrictions are determined by the average daily temperatures; therefore, it is difficult to determine when the restrictions will start or end especially given the current dry weather pattern. In the past, freeze/thaw restrictions have generally lasted until the end of April. When the average daily temperatures and the length of days increase, the ground beneath the roads begins to thaw and become unstable. The weight of large trucks and equipment can damage the asphalt.During this period, all trucks except fire trucks, Metro District trucks and residential trash trucks will be restricted. Public Safety monitors the daily temperatures and will call contractors as the restrictions approach.
